Day 1 - Newcastle to Armidale

by Phil on August 28, 2009

What a great first day!

We met in Newcastle at Hadley Cycles (plug). What a fine place to start the journey. They have plenty of nice cycles and riding gear, go and take take a look whenever you get the chance.

Ready to Depart

We set off  to McDonald’s Heatherbrae for breakfast (thanks Michelle and the Heatherbrae Team). Thanks Phil for sending ray and I back to Hadley’s for the items that were siiting there neatly packaged for collection the first time we were there.

We headed up the Bucketts Way through Gloucester and had a lovely scenic drive. Ray and I caught up to the group just outside Uralla and shy of Armidale (thanks again Phil for the extra travel).

Upon arrival at the Powerhouse Motel in Armidale I couldn’t help but notice Sherm’s nice X5 (thanks again Kloster BMW for your support). The Rural Fire Servce Served us a nice lunch - thanks!! We got our act together and made our way to Ben Venue Primary School. 400+ kids had a pyjama day to raise money for RMHC. They raised over $750 - wow!!! Ronald made an appearance and Linc took the kids through how to cycle safely. Thanks very much to all the kids, parents and teachers who made the afternoon possible. Thanks Linc for reminding the kids no less than 4 times that they need to keep their bikes clean and polished. Oh yeah, and wear a helmet!

We arrived at Armidale ex-Services Club at 6pm for pre-dinner drinks. The guys had a chance to mingle with supporters and sponsors. Who will win the hill climb tomorrow? My money’s on Dave Munro. But look out for David Bridger who’s hungry for a solid win and Tooley’s the dark horse - who know’s?

Tonight the Ex-Service Club was packed out with over 300 supporters!! Thanks everyone who attended. Thanks very much to all those who donated auction items and donations plus those who bidded on the auctions. Mark Beretta from Sunrise was our MC on the night and a keynote speech was made by Matt Burke former Waratah and Wallaby (thanks both). Benita and Troy Johnson did an amazing job organising this event, the atmosphere was great and everyuone had a great night.

Full House

Over $35K was raised tonight!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

A huge thank you to Steve Sewell from Invest Blue who donated $10,000 plus a financial plan worth $4,400 for the auction. Thanks very much Invest Blue for all your support.

Off to Tamworth tomorrow!!!
